On a hot summer’s night last summer, I attended a concert & movie screening at the Amsterdam Brewery as part of the Open Roof Festival. Beer flowed from freshly cracked kegs while a Toronto indie band played for the crowd. Just after sunset, we all took our seats to watch Broken Social Scene’s documentary/fictional love story set in the city called “This Movie is Broken” under the stars. We sang along when the band played and we were all brought back to the weekend a few years back when the great power outage took over the city.
The Festival is genius – add it to the reasons why I love Toronto. This year’s Open Roof Festival lineup is diverse and impressive. Featuring documentaries from HotDocs, films from the Toronto International Film Festival and a heavy focus on ART (Banksy? Group of Seven? check. check.), this is tops of my favorite way to spend a Thursday night on a summer’s night in Toronto.
Good news is the idea is catching on in the city – check out other (FREE!) outdoor screenings at Yonge & Dundas Square, Metro Square and Christie Pitts, too!
